Its signature oblong cutouts on dark, glossy, heart shaped leaves make it one of the most recognizable of all tropical plants. The holes in the leaves are called "fenestrations", and are the mark of a more mature plant. Juvenile leaves are much smaller and windowless. The exact reason for the holes is debated, but prevailing theories suggest the holes support improved light
