BR's decision to switch to Type 5 and in particular Class 60 diesels in the late 1980s started a gradual withdrawal of the fleet with just 28 left by 1994
after which they resembled the rebuilt Merchant Navy Class

They were based on the earlier P2 class but featured a slightly improved boiler pressure and tractive effort. 50 of these locomotives were built in total, 30 were built at the Darlington works and 20 at the Gateshead works. They all lasted into BR ownership but were all scrapped with none of them surviving into preservation. This locomotive is fitted with a DCC
