Some are fairly uniform in size and weight and served as monies of account like manillas
A nice 19th Century solid bronze manilla with great colour and patina
It is a Russian mid-20th Century medical model
They are also worn in Marriage ceremonies where they serve as part of a “bride price”

These were carved by the tribes that lived along the Pacific North West Coast of the US and Canada and were sold as tourist souvenirs to generate income. This is a lovely Victorian example and, although most of the paint has work=n off over the last century, the highlighting is still visible in red and black.
