This highly ornate solid gold mourning keepsake locket was crafted by the well known goldsmith Henry Matthews. This antique locket was assayed* (tested for gold purity*) at Birmingham Assay Office in 1917. The anterior surface features a shield shaped cartouche. The shield motif conveys the desire to protect.
