The demigod Maui imprisoned the sun here to extend the day, thus receiving the name Haleakala, Hawaiian for house of the sun. Haleakala is home to 103 endangered species, more than any other U. S. National Park. On the summit, sits Hawaiis first astronomical observatory, opened in the 1960s for astrophysical
